The art of the (New Year’s) resolution

The art of the (New Year’s) resolution

Nowadays the tradition of setting yourself New Year’s Resolutions is a debated topic. Some people still believe in the yearly ritual of personal goal setting but many do not. This is hardly surprising given our fast-paced and demanding lifestyle.

Who needs New Year’s resolutions when you can set yourself objectives all year round, right? Today we have a plethora of advice and information at the push of a button, which enables us to choose our goals carefully and at any moment we want. Not to mention how easy it is nowadays to send or post news of our successes online anywhere and anytime, ensuring that we are rewarded instantaneously with praise and approval. Even in the professional world achievements are no longer only rewarded during the end of year appraisal.

There is nothing wrong with all-year-round goal setting, as long as they are attainable. So, by all means, heed the advice out there to define best practice SMART objectives, but let’s not forget about setting ourselves meaningful resolutions too. After all, a resolution by definition is a decision you make to be determined in achieving an action or a purpose. In other words, you declare your motivation to yourself and, if you want, to others.

Reflecting on what we find most interesting to do and what gives us energy can help us set attainable goals for ourselves. After all, people do best what they naturally enjoy most, so gaining insight on the motivational drives behind our resolutions is key. Hudson helps a lot of clients with getting a view on their employees’ motivations to perform well in their job. Performances are not only determined by ability; what an employee wants also plays an important role (e.g. based on the Hudson Motivational Drives questionnaire).

However, motivation is key for any kind of performance, not only job performance. Here are some tips on questions to ask yourself to help define a meaningful resolution for you, whether it is professional or not:

  • What was the reason for your first smile today?
  • Which event/activity/moment last year gave you energy? Which one drained you?
  • If you asked your best friend, what would he/she say is your greatest strength?
  • In 3 words, describe your perfect life in 1 year/5 years/ 10 years.
  • What really motivates you?

Now look if the resolutions you have made yourself, are in line with or will contribute to the answers of these questions. If they do, then it will be a lot easier to attain them.
GOOD LUCK!
