Are Emerging Leaders in Europe ready for the future?

Are Emerging Leaders in Europe ready for the future?

In comparison with general (non-managerial) professionals, emerging leaders are well on track to develop the crucial leadership skills – ‘Vision’, ‘Action’, ‘Impact’, ‘Human’ & ‘Drive’ – described in the study ‘Developing leaders with Hudson’s Growth Potential model’, Bogaert, J., & Windey, I., 2014. However, there are still a few areas in which our future senior leaders can evolve further, as can be seen below.

Important findings

Hudson’s ‘Growth Potential Model’ defines the competencies that will make people good leaders in the New Normal. This model was created based on the thorough analysis both of numerous existing leadership models and of criteria that predict the success of leaders.

Emerging leaders have opportunities to evolve when compared with C-level leaders (indicated in the graph by *).

Vision

The most important facet for which emerging leaders can still evolve further is in developing their strategic view. The conceptual and innovative thinking of our emerging leaders is quite close to that of our current senior leaders.

Impact

Our leaders would benefit greatly from further developing their capacities to lead, motivate and persuade. Doing so would enable them to inspire other people, and it would help them to unleash the potential and talent of those around them even more, something that will be crucially important, especially in the New Normal.

While development is still also possible for a number of facets under the three other factors: ActionHuman and Drive, the differences between emerging and C-level leaders are smaller.

We also took the opportunity to examine other socially relevant and interesting topics, such as the differences in the emerging leadership profiles of men and women and the differences between emerging leaders in multinationals and those in local organisations.
