FIFTY SHADES OF INSIGHTS ®




In a world where it is increasingly important to present oneself as agile and flexible as possible to cope with changing circumstances, more and more people are looking for ‘easy to use tools’ to cultivate this agility.

Showing your colours?
Insights® is just such a tool. It presents itself as an uncomplicated, straightforward tool that – as the name suggests – helps to gain ‘insight’ into your own personality and the preferred styles of others. The tool is based on the idea that there are four basic personality typologies, which Insights® attributes to a specific color (red, yellow, green or blue). Thanks to its visual and simple construction, the model allows professionals from all walks of life to get started with the tool in a pragmatic way.

Where’s the catch?
There is a catch:  Insights® is often simplified and reduced to the four colors. The risk is that people will reflect on personality in terms of contrasts and polarities. The danger of a “box mentality” is lurking around the corner. This goes completely against the fundamental goals of the tool, namely emphasizing the complementarity between people. Everybody is able to ‘switch on’ their various color energies and to adapt themselves in an agile way to better interact with people with different preferred styles.

As good as it gets
When people get a profound insight into what gives them energy, what their potential triggers are and to what style they spontaneously tend to go for, it becomes a lot easier for them to develop a balanced self-image. Issues that one used to avoid can now be put in perspective and feedback is processed more easily. The next step is to translate this to the interpersonal spectrum. Insights can be used both with colleagues, within the framework of hierarchical relationships, as in the sales environment in order to optimize the commercial success. By gaining insight into the preferred styles of others, you gradually learn to adapt yourself and to develop coping mechanisms to bridge potential differences, and gain more impact.

A shared future in full color
Organizations focus more and more on the development of their people, which should boost the engagement & performance. We tend to talk about weaknesses, gaps, areas that need improvement. But what if we – instead of wanting to be chameleons – search for synergies within the rich color palette a team has to offer? In that way you valorize people in their strengths and you can strive for agility and flexibility in a positive, constructive way as a team.
