When to Hire Interim Managers

What are the ideal situations for hiring interim managers?

 

To manage changes

 

This includes crisis management and restructuring, managing organizations through change processes (e.g. due to rapid growth), and introduction of new management techniques, among other things. Typically, the focus will be on strategy, people and processes.

To manage a project

Very often your organization does not have the internal resources available on the spot to manage projects such as an acquisition, a major IT- or ERP-related project, or to set up a new business unit. Here an experienced interim manager can intervene immediately to set the project on the right course.

To manage transitions

This typically includes situations where members of your senior management staff are temporarily unavailable due to illness, maternity leave, or specific project work they are doing elsewhere in your organization. It’s also ideal for filling temporary business gaps while a permanent recruitment process is ongoing.

To benefit from specific expertise

When you seek specific operational expertise, a permanent hire might not always be the best solution. Examples include: knowledge of a specific market or country, particular functional area expertise (finance and control, human resources, supply chain, ERP implementation), mergers and acquisitions experience (due diligence, financial aspects, post-merger integration), or extensive start-up experience.
